Using visual art at Christchurch Mansion,the aim of this taster session is to provide an opportunity to share your expressive and technical skills in creative writing by looking at visual art and writing poetry and prose in response. The museum offers a visual delight of landscapes, portraits and local scenes from 1400 to the present day. Learners will view this work then undertake exploratory exercises and be guided in the production of new work and encouraged to consider both the craft elements and the wider contexts of writing in response to visual art.

Course aim

Based at Christchurch Mansion, the session provides an opportunity to share your expressive and technical skills in creative writing by looking at visual art and writing poetry and prose in response

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners
  • You should be comfortable writing during the session and possibly reading or sharing work aloud, in the group. It is an active session rather than a 'talk'.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have created some original writing in response to visual work
  • Have engaged positively with visual culture housed in the Ipswich community
  • Have engaged with creativity and the basic contexts of writing creatively

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • discussion and verbal feedback if appropriate

What else do I need to know?

  • A pen and note book or some paper is a good idea, or if you prefer to write on screen a tablet or laptop will work too.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
