Day School: Wingfield College, Wingfield Church & Syleham Church

The owners of the college will be our guides around this magnificent Georgian building, which represents the origin of education in England. We will also visit Wingfield Church which includes some interesting tombs and carvings. We will then tour the college and the four acre gardens which includes a topiary garden. After lunch we will visit the lovely little Syleham Church.

Start time 10:00 and ends at 4pm but included 1hour lunch break and tea breaks. Meet at Wingfield College IP21 5RA - parking at adjacent Wingfield Barns. Later parking at Syleham Church. Please bring packed lunch or visit one of the local pubs.

Course aim

to provide an introduction to the history of Wingfield College founded in 1362. to discover the quaint little church in Syleham with its interesting memorials and significant tombs.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • discuss the similarities/differences between the two churches
  • summarise the difference between Georgian and Tudor architecture
  • Find out more about the origins of education in England

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring a packed lunch, or you can visit one of the several local pubs to dine. Disabled access: Parking in the drive to the house and access to ground floor. Syleham church is accessible to all.
