Suitable for the complete beginner just getting started with computers as well as those with some basic experience wanting to refresh their skills. A chance to explore Microsoft Office, online photo editing applications, along with email and file management.

Course aim

The course will help, support and encourage IT beginners to learn skills in photo editing, Microsoft Office (Word & Excel) along with file management, internet searching and safety, email and evidencing topics.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify how to use file management when documenting each topic
  • Edit photos (cropping, blurring, red eye, spot healing)
  • Choose the right programme for writing a letter and add a picture
  • Describe how to use Microsoft Excel (basic spreadsheets) data entry and formatting
  • Demonstrate the use of email: setting up, writing, adding attachments, sending and receiving (email etiquette)

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • a notepad, pen/pencil would be helpful for recording information

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
