A guided walk through the villages of Manningtree and Mistley. You will explore the villages and walk by the beautiful River Stour to uncover the terrible tale of Matthew Hopkins, the notorious Witchfinder General. Meet at The Walls (at the junction with Manningtree High Street at 10:30am).

Course aim

A guided walk through the villages of Manningtree and Mistley.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • Sensible footwear is recommended and appropriate attire for an outside walk - we cannot guarantee the weather!

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss the industry, past and present of these two small river side towns
  • Discuss why Matthew Hopkins was able to create the role of Witchfinder General for himself
  • Identify the national events which led to the rise of Matthew Hopkins

How will I be taught?

  • The session involves a guided walk around the villages and you are encouraged to ask and respond to questions throughout.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • The event is informal and the guide will use question and answer and encourage group and individual participation in discussion throughout.

What else do I need to know?

  • Sensible walking shoes and attire appropriate to weather conditions on the day. You may find a small notepad and pen useful or a camera/phone to take pictures if you would like a record of what you have seen.
