We will explore the writings of George Orwell in the context of his interesting life and the social, political and historical times through which he lived and which greatly informed his fiction and non-fiction output. Texts to be studied will be as follows: His first book, 'Down and out in Paris and London' Other non-fiction works: 'The Road to Wigan Pier' 'Homage to Catalonia' 'The Lion and the Unicorn' The pre-War novels: 'Burmese Days' The Clergyman's Daughter' Keep the Aspidistra Flying' 'Coming Up for Air' The major post-War novels: 'Animal Farm' 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' In addition time will be given to consider some of his important shorter essays and journalism and poems.

This course runs from 10:15am - 4.15pm inclusive of a one hour lunch break.

Course aim

This two day school aims to examine and begin to appreciate the writings and life of George Orwell, against the backdrop of the era through which he lived.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • approach Orwell's writings with an enhanced critical awareness
  • express ideas and opinions with increased confidence
  • have a greater awareness of Orwells's works and their relationship to his life and times

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Some knowledge of George Orwell's writings would be useful.
