Course aim

To investigate how the migration of film creatives to Hollywood in the inter-war years profoundly affected the American film - in particular, the thriller genre known as 'film noir'.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Evaluate European influence on the American film noir
  • Identify some themes, plots and conventions of film noir
  • Appraise the work of diverse directors of, and actors in, film noir
  • Recognise political/social/cultural meaning in film noir

How will I be taught?

  • Teaching methods will be presentation of film clips and slides by tutor, observation by learners, question and answer involving whole group, group discussion.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Please see previous question for this day activity. By the end of the day, learners will have a wide cache of information, which the tutor will review, collectively and individually if necessary.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A handout will be provided as backup to our study day.
