Wildlife and Landscapes of Minsmere and Dunwich Heath

This course is aimed to inspire and educate students, using a wide range of colourful slides, about the extensive range of flora and fauna found around the reserves of Dunwich Heath NT and Minsmere RSPB. Species looked at include reed dwelling birds, ducks, geese and wading birds. A range of woodland and heathland butterflies and wild flowers are also explained in some details. Orchids found on both reserves are also included showing area where they thrive well and when they can be seen at their best. The course is also interactive with a wide range of questions and answers also welcomed from the students. Such species include Bittern, Marsh Harrier and Bearded Tit, Dartford Warbler, Woodlark, Stonechat, Stone CurleW and butterflies including The White Admiral and Silver Studded Blue. Woodland birds found around RSPB Minsmere are also covered will the use of bird song, bird call and ID pointers (ie. Great Spotted Woodpecker, Treecreeper and Goldcrest)

Course aim

To provide an insight into the widlife Dunwich Heath and RSPB Minsmere Reserve - incl. Heathland breeding birds and butterflies, ducks, wading birds, birds of prey and woodland birds and butterflies. A range of Orchids and wild flowers also included

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify 4 Heathland butterflies
  • Identify 4 Reed dwelling birds
  • Identify 4 wildflowers or orchids found on both nature reserves

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • 1. USE OF A WIDE RANGE OF VARIED AND VISUAL COLOURFUL SLIDES PROJECTED ONTO SCREEN 2. USE OF BIRD SONG AND BIRD CALL 3. STUDENTS ENCOURAGED TO ASK AND ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT SLIDES USED IN THE COURSE DURING THE RUN OF COURSE

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

  • Nothing else is needed
  • Notepad and Pen A range of field guides and guides / maps of the areas covered will also be supplied by the tutor during the course
