A progression course to solve the jargon and conundrums we all face when trying to find our way around a computer. Learn everything from switching on to all you need to know about Social Media!

Course aim

To extend learning and skills gained in the previous Monday IT Club course and continue building confidence both individually and as a group. In addition to office software, recognise the benefits of online shopping and online security.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Online Shopping & Online Security - Explore e-commerce websites from Amazon to Tesco and also take in the alternative shopping experience at Ebay and Gumtree.
  • Digital Photography & Photo Editing - learn basic camera techniques and uploading captured images to computer. Learn ditigal photo editing skills eg. crop, rotate, retouching, overlays.
  • Spreadsheets - learn how to create documents using Microsoft Excel. Enter data for an address book to form a database, use functions to calculate data, and learn how to style a spreadsheet attractively.
  • Using Email - creating a free email account online, managing your InBox, sending, receiving and forwarding. Create a Contacts Group to send email to multiple recipients. Attaching files and photos to an email.
  • Word Processing & File Management - learn how to create documents from templates using Microsoft Word eg: letter, cv, flyer, poster. Create rudimentary filing system with folders and sub-folders.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Some handouts will be given but a notebook and pen would be useful.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

As a registered charity, and to meet our funders’ requirements, we need to check a few things with you before you book. Please could we ask that you check the list below to ensure you meet our basic criteria:

  • You are paying the standard fee (with a credit or debit card) or you are on any of the qualifying benefits
  • You have a valid email address so that you can receive confirmation of your booking
  • You have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2018
  • You have read and accept our standard terms and conditions
