We will use common situations like shopping, travel, house and home, DIY and health to develop your ability to work with decimals, fractions and percentages. We will start to explore different units of measurement and time.

Additional information about this course

Learners will be referred as progressions from earlier E3 Class. Any learners not on as progression MUST attend an initial assessment session. This can be done at Vauxhall Centre on Thursday 14th Feb 2019 at 12:30pm.

Course aim

This course will help you to enhance your skills and confidence in Maths. You will practise your Maths skills through everyday situations and get ready to progress onto a City & Guilds Level 1 Functional Skills Maths qualification.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • You will need to talk to a member of staff and do a short activity to make sure the course is right for you. For more information and to book an appointment please call 0300 303 3464
  • You must be a fluent speaker of English.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Increase my confidence in using my Maths in everyday life
  • Count and use larger numbers, use the 12 hour clock to gain information from timetables
  • Perform calculations using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and begin to explain your methods
  • Consider the use of fractions and decimals in common situations, e.g. in retail sales, telling the time and on receipts
  • Determine the means to measure physical space, gas and liquids, discuss numerical information available through lists, charts and tables.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Official document(s) showing the correct spelling of your name, address and date of birth. Certificates for any Maths qualifications you already have. A folder, some paper and a pen/pencil to every lesson.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • It is useful to think about where you use Maths in everyday life and where you find this difficult.
