If you want to gain a sense of inner calm, learn how to relax and pick up some holistic therapy techniques along the way, then the WEA's 6 week course entitled 'complementary therapies' could be for you. The course is aimed at promoting well-being and community engagement and is a mixture of reflexology, Indian head massage and aromatherapy in addition to simple music meditation and the use of chakra colours to gain inner calm. You will receive and provide treatments whilst on the course and be guided throughout by your tutor. If you have a medical condition. please check this course is suitable for you before enrolling.

Course aim

This course promotes well-being and community engagement through the introduction of theory and practical holistic therapies. Topics covered include relaxation, music meditation, aromatherapy massage techniques, Indian head massage and reflexology.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use music and breathing exercises to help you meditate and relax better
  • Gain an understanding about the benefits of 3 aromatherapy oils and actively participate in simple massage to enhance well-being
  • Engage with other like minded learners to increase your confidence and community involvement, whilst sharing and discussing your experiences on the course
  • Receive and provide a seated Indian head massage to focus the mind and promote health and relaxation
  • Receive and provide a foot reflexology treatment which focuses on 3 specific zones.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be useful to wear loose clothing and bring a pillow, a blanket and also a small hand sanitiser and a bottle of water with you.
