Escape from the hurly-burly of the Christmas shopping by indulging in this celebration and exploration of the most festive films ever made. From "It's a Wonderful Life" to "Love Actually", discover what makes the perfect Christmas movie (and what doesn’t!), compare the various versions and variations of "A Christmas Carol", and be amazed at the shocking truth about Santa! Finally, this day school will provide the definitive answer to the debate which always rages at this time of year: “Is 'Die Hard' actually a Christmas movie?”

Course aim

To provide an introduction to the various types of festive films, and to discover what makes the perfect Christmas movie, with a view to enabling the student to watch films over the Yuletide period with greater insight and enjoyment.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the most popular Christmas films, and why some can be labelled "Cult Classics".
  • Compare the differences in the various film versions of A Christmas Carol.
  • Watch Christmas films over the holiday period with greater insight and enjoyment.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • You may like to watch Christmas films: Holiday Inn (1942); White Christmas (1954); It's a Wonderful Life (1946); Scrooge (1951); Scrooged (1988); The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992); The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993); Love Actually (2003).
