Introduction to Skills for Communicating with Professionals

This course will help you improve your speaking and writing so that you can communicate with professional such as teachers, doctors or lawyers.

Course aim

This course will enable you to improve your communication in English. You will learn how to write a formal letter. You will also improve your spoken English.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Write a letter using a formal layout.
  • Use appropriate language for a formal letter.
  • Learn to check your writing for mistakes.
  • Discuss how to improve your writing and speaking.
  • Address an envelope using UK conventions.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Bring your own device : phone laptop or tablet if you have one. A dictionary. Pen, paper and folder. Your glasses! For the first lesson: national insurance number if you claim benefit, a passport to show you are eligible .

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • It is hoped that we will run a follow on course in 2019.
