This course is a look at the history and uses of money. What different items have been, and indeed are still used as money? When does money go wrong and what causes financial crises? How does money measure value – what impact does inflation and hyper-inflation have on money as a medium of exchange? What impact does money have on our everyday lives? How does the central bank control the supply of money and why is this important? How and why do exchange rates change and how does this affect our economy?

Course aim

Money - we all want it and we all need it, but what is it? This course will look at the history and uses of money to help understand it further.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Outline the history of money and its function as a medium of exchange
  • Analyse the role of money in determining the level of economic activity
  • Summarise how central banks and governments control the supply of money
  • Discuss the role of markets like the foreign exchange market and the futures market in determining the value of money
  • Evaluate the impact of inflation on income and the level of economic activity

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
