Taster: Supporting Your Child with Maths

The course will look at the variety of ways in which maths is taught in school today. You will be taught the different methods used to teach mathematical concepts in a primary school.

Course aim

The course aims to give information to parents and carers about the ways in which Maths is currently taught in primary schools. Also, the course should give you the confidence to support your child’s learning at home.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise how place value is used to help solve maths sums.
  • Recognise how number bonds are used to help children solve sums mentally.
  • Look at the ways in which concrete, abstract and pictorial methods are helpful for children learning mathematical concepts.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
