Introduction to Aromatherapy

Would you like to learn more about essential oils and how you can use Aromatherapy within your home for personal well-being? This short course will introduce you to the basic principles surrounding this complementary therapy. We will define the importance of choosing suitable oils and how to best take care of them. We will also explore their practical use, which will include creating a personal blend, using the oils for a self hand massage and during a meditation experience. The overall aim is for you to feel more confident in choosing essential oils for your own use.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to the key elements of Aromatherapy and how to apply it for personal well-being.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • There are contraindications for essential oil use during pregnancy, if suffering from epilepsy or certain skin conditions, so if you have any pre-existing medical conditions, please check with your doctor that Aromatherapy is suitable for you.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Outline the benefits of using Aromatherapy for personal use.
  • Identify the main contraindications when using essential oils.
  • Create a personal Aromatherapy blend.
  • Demonstrate a self hand massage using essential oils.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
