Taster: Endeavour:building courage and confidence after abuse

This taster session is a brief introduction for the 6 week course that will take place over the following weeks. In a supportive and safe environment, students will be able to gather initial knowledge about how to build their confidence after experiencing abuse. The session focus will be on the following themes: 1- Abuse (how to identify it, its different forms, types of abusive relationships/partners, the abusive cycle, among other related issues) 2- Introduction to communication skills (verbal and non-verbal) and assertiveness 3- Definition of Conflict These themes will be discussed more in depth during the following 6 week course.

Course aim

To provide a brief introduction to communication skills, dealing with conflict and techniques to improve confidence building for people who have experienced abusive relationships.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify what is abuse and abusive relationships types/partners
  • Identify the abusive cycle and how to overcome/break it
  • List some of the elements of successful communication
  • Describe what we mean by assertiveness

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
