This course is made up of a range of 5 themes, covering topics on health, relaxation, nutrition and well-being to encourage you to make positive changes about your own health living lifestyles. Each week will focus on a different topic with active participation, this will involve some physical movement. We will explore the causes of stress and learn stress busting techniques. We will also look at your eating habits and tips for making positive nutritional changes. You will also engage in gentle relaxation and breathing techniques to use at home and fitness tips for gentle walking and stretching. In addition to this, the last week will include seated massage techniques which will extend you learning at home to help your friends and family benefit too and help you engage with the wider community.

Course aim

This course aim is focused on promoting healthy living. A range of health, relaxation, nutrition and well-being topics will be explored to promote confidence and community engagement

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify where I can use techniques learnt to improve my own lifestyle and improve my day to day healthy living
  • Demonstrate activities which will help to improve my relaxation and reduce my stress levels
  • Extend the techniques I have learnt to enable me to gain more confidence in social interaction within the community and may lead to improving my employability skills
  • Discover gentle exercises and foods used in different cultures to identify the differences used from your own and to promote an interest in cooking more healthily and with colourful foods
  • Discuss the specific techniques I can use after completion of the course to benefit me in making lifestyle changes for a more balanced healthier living

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
