The real cowboys and Indians - this course tells the history of the American West as its never been told before. Forget Hollywood, in this course we examine the real history, from wagon trains to last stands, from gold rushes to land grabs, from Wyatt Earp to Sitting Bull and much more besides. Prepare to be both educated and shocked at how the United States conquered the Wild West.

Course aim

The course presents the history of the American West between 1840 and 1900, the height of the so-called Wild West of popular culture

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Outline how the West was won by government policies, settlement and wars
  • Identify the different Native American peoples of the West and their experiences of subjugation and colonisation
  • Examine the Indian wars and other great historical marker points in the history of the American West
  • Identify how other non-white cultures, such as the Chinese, fitted into the new West
  • Outline the decline and end of Indian resistance and the Old West and its popularisation through Hollywood film

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
