An introduction to Film Studies

We explore the subject in a historical and critical perspective while considering different production and creative processes in a non academic or technical way. Topics will include: The history of early film making; Genres: Film Noir and Montage; The golden years of Hollywood and the constraints of the studio system; Methods of film production including the work of the legendary cameraman Jack Cardif; The films and work of: Sergei Eisenstein; Alfred Hitchcock; Stanley Kubrick; Francis Ford Coppola; Jean-Luc Godard; Federico Fellini; Quentin Tarantino; Mike Figgis The democratisation of film making through social media and affordable portable media.

Course aim

The course is designed for participants who have an interest in film as an entertainment and communication medium.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise key milestones in the history of film.
  • Uttilise methods with which to analyse and appreciate cinema.
  • Identify aesthetic qualities of selected films

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
