Leonard Bernstein was born in 1918, and his Centenary presents an opportunity to examine his life and work exploring the many and different aspects including pianist, composer, conductor, and presenter of radio and television programmes about music.

Course aim

To present an overview of the life and work of Leonard Bernstein. To examine certain of his compositions in detail.

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the many challenges faced by Bernstein as a creative artist
  • Identify the various musical threads running through his life
  • Identify major pieces of work by Bernstein in a range of genre

How will I be taught?

  • This is a Day School and whilstome discussion will be encouraged, it is expected that pointers to further folow-up rewadings and listening will be provided

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
