The 1960s have a strong claim to be the most remarkable decade of the 20th century, if not the entire millennium. Startling changes in individual civil rights and possibilities on an unprecedented scale took place in this age despite continuing tensions and anxieties caused by the Cold War, racial inequality in the USA and the prospect of revolution in Europe. Popular music confronted these issues whilst simultaneously celebrating the new freedom pioneered by the contraceptive pill, drug experimentation and the more assertive individualism which defied the old deferential codes of behaviour. Was the resultant youth counterculture to be the harbinger of a new world or merely a passing phase, a ripple on the kaleidoscope of history?

Course aim

The course will examine the popular music culture of the 1960s as both a reflection and instigator of major social, economic and political change in the western world.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Apply critical thinking skills to assess change and continuity in historical processes.
  • Apply critical thinking skills to assess cultural values held by various groups in different societies at different points in the past.
  • Apply critical thinking skills to assess issues concerning diversity both from a contemporary and historical perspective.
  • Discuss and critique the drivers for change in popular social culture.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
