Native People of the Americas - the Aztecs

Ref: C2225749

It is 500 years exactly since the Conquistadores first met the Aztecs and the consequences of that encounter reverberated for centuries the world over. The rise of the Aztecs was as spectacular as their fall. Yet, taking the longer view of their historical background and their descendants' fate under the Spanish Empire and since, we can recognize that the story springs from generic features of Native American life. After accounting for the Aztecs' roots in more than 3000 years of Mexico's history, we shall consider how they imposed themselves on neighbouring peoples and built a capital of unprecedented size. We shall then assess their sociology, economy, politics and philosophy before trying to make sense of their notorious religion. That the Aztecs' descendants survive to this day is a remarkable feat in itself that we shall seek to explain too. Our evidence ranges from archeology to history and studies of contemporary life.
