No period of history excites so much popular interest as the era of the two World Wars and no period is more important for an understanding of the World in which we live today. Find out more in a systematic way by doing this course

Course aim

To give an understanding of the history of the two World Wars and of the inter-war years, focusing on Europe.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • List the key events of European history for the period 1914 to 1945
  • Identify and outline the main causes of the First and Second World Wars in Europe
  • Assess the impact of the two World Wars on Europe and on the position of the great European powers in the world
  • Evaluate historical source material of a variety of different kinds

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Students should bring a notebook and pen. All other materials will be provided.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
