This conflict divided a young and idealistic country. The course examines the causes of the war, weapons, tactics, music and medical treatment. It introduces leading personalities and examines the legacy of the war. One session will involve handling artefacts.
Course aim
To study the American Civil War and its impact on a young and developing country

By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Identify the issues which divided the country and recognise the motives of those involved
- Comment on the role of slavery
- Describe the ways in which the war was fought and understand the soldiers` experience
- Compare interpretations of the war
- Evaluate the legacy of the war for the USA
How will I be taught?
- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
- You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
What kind of feedback can I expect?
- A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
- You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
What else do I need to know?
- Nothing else is needed
- All materials will be provided
