Music from France, including the grandeur of Versailles and the court of Louis XIV; Berlioz the individual and eccentric; French opera and all the regulations demanded by the Paris Opera; French ballet; the scandal of Offenbach. Impressionism; Les Six and the 1920s; visitors to France, including Russian ballet companies and more. Composers featured will include Lully, Charpentier, Berlioz, Massenet, Offenbach, Debussy, Ravel and others.

Course aim

A description of music in France (mostly Paris) from the time of Louis XIV to the present day

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • explain how dance styles feature in a great amount of French music
  • demonstrate how French composers explored new possibilities in instrumental timbre
  • show how descriptive music played a strong part in the approach of French composers

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
