The Enigmatic Aztecs

Ref: C2225536

By the eve of the European conquest (1519-21), the Aztecs had created the largest city in the Americas and an extensive empire. Their philosophers were exploring the great issues of humanity. Yet the capital tolerated rites of spectacular savagery. The contradiction probably struck the Aztecs themselves as it did the Spaniards. It can be explained in part by an astonishing history of development. After assessing that story, exploring the sociology of the city and its hinterland and considering the historical and archeological evidence of the notorious rites and the ideas behind them, we can review the range of interpretations that have been offered for the Aztecs. We may discover scope for a fresh approach.
