Revolution and Revolutionaries

Ref: C2225526

What makes a revolutionary moment? What factors make a "revolutionary". The people who lead revolutions may appear to be charismatic visionaries, but all too often, become merely self-promoting charlatans. Can we find common themes that may link revolutions over a long period of time? We had a "Glorious" revolution in the 17th century, but nothing during the 19th when continental Europe was convulsed repeatedly. Were the American and French Revolutions part of the same process? What about more recent, more ideological revolutions, such as the Russian, the Chinese and the Cuban.....? Plenty to discuss is guaranteed.

Course aim

Political revolutions are, almost by definition, fascinating events. We shall study events from a broad historical background, and see if it is possible to identify common themes.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify what makes a revolution different from a mere "palace coup"
  • Recognise the main features of the revolutions we discuss
  • Begin to analyse the causes, and effects of revolutions
  • Evaluate if armed struggle is a valid means of changing governments
  • Determine if moderate reform is more the "British Way" of implementing change.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Free discussion will play an important part of this course. The tutor will creat an online resource dedicated to this course which will contain a variety of supporting materials.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • If you have a laptop or tablet (and wifi is available!), it would be useful to bring it to the sessions.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
