Exploring Art and Architecture

Ref: C2225510

The best works of art are multi-faceted. This course will give the opportunity to examine chosen examples in detail. We will explore the nature of the work, how it came to be commissioned or created, what the creator intended, how it fitted into its historical context and what the ideas behind the work were. Each work will raise different questions and opportunities for discussion. The range of works will be as wide as possible – paintings, buildings, sculpture etc., and from a variety of different historical periods, from a medieval manuscript to a Victorian church. Each should provide an insight into the world in which it was created and encourage a deeper understanding and a closer way of looking at art, in all its forms.

Course aim

Taking a single work of art each week – painting, sculpture or another form – we will explore the work, its meaning and context, and gain new insights.
