Day School: African American Civil Rights

We welcome guest speaker, Stephen Clarke, on this One Day School where we examine the origins and development of the Civil Rights Movement in the USA. The course will offer an assessment of Martin Luther King's contribution to the movement by examining the positive and negative impact on the events of the 1950’s and 1960’s and review what has happened in the USA since his death in 1968.

Course aim

This One Day School will provide an overview of the origins of the Civil Rights Movement, examine Martin Luther Kings contribution to the movement and review of what has happened in the USA since his death in 1968.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Gain an overview of the origins and development of the Civil Rights Movement in the USA
  • Assess Martin Luther Kings contribution to the Civil Rights Movement
  • Review what has happened in the USA since Martin Luther King’s death in 1968

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
