Delve into the lives of a number of famous English gardeners and the influential gardens they created. Included will be Lawrence Johnston and Hidcote, Joseph Paxton and Chatsworth, Henry Hoare and Stourhead, Charles Hamilton and Painshill Park, and Sissinghurst and Vita Sackville-West.

Course aim

To introduce students to a number of great English gardens and the gardeners who created them.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss the structure of the 20th century garden.
  • Describe the beginnings of the English Landscape Movement.
  • Relate the achievements of Joseph Paxton, with particular reference to glasshouses.
  • Analyse the elements that contributed to the Victorian garden.
  • Assess the use of colour within the garden from the end of 19th century.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
