The splendour of St Mark's, Venice (Gabrieli & Monteverdi); the development of opera (Monteverdi through to Handel, Rossini, Verdi and others); Stradivarius, Guarneri and the development of the violin (Vivaldi & Corelli); the rise and decline of the harpsichord; the concerto; Italian unification; Verdi; verismo opera (Puccini and others). The music of Handel, although not Italian, will also be included, and the country was such a major influence for him.

Course aim

A consideration of music in Italy at three high points of her history - the Renaissance, the late Baroque and opera in the second half of the nineteenth century. Music examples played live and on recordings with scope for class discussion.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed; nor is it necessary to read music

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Trace the development of various musical forms
  • Demonstrate the influence of both Church and State on composers
  • Show how musical instruments have developed in these periods

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
