The course will introduce you to Julian Barnes and his writing with some biographical details. We will then consider a selection of his novels, with readings from and discussions of them.

Course aim

To give an overview of the life and work of the author Julian Barnes with a focus on a number of his novels

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • The course is for those interested in the novels of the author Julian Barnes from 1980 to the present day.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe some important aspects of Julian Barnes's life and work
  • Understand the idea of a Bildungsroman in literature
  • Identify the concept of post-modernism in literature
  • Read and discuss extracts from selected novels critically
  • Carry out research which may include the use of IT

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will need to read/have read a selection of Julian Barnes's novels

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • Students will carry out a mid-course review of progress made

What else do I need to know?

  • You will need a copy of the following novels by Julian Barnes: Metroland (1980) Flaubert's Parrot (1984) The Sense of an Ending (2011) The Noise of Time (2016)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • It will be useful to have obtained a copy of the novels mentioned above and begun reading them in the order given.
