Dictators: The Dramatic Demise of Modern Tyrants

From Mussolini to Gaddafi, the 20th and 21st Centuries have witnessed the dramatic falls of many dictators. This course examines how 10 all-powerful tyrants loss everything and often their lives in dramatic falls from power. This course covers dictators from Europe, Africa, Middle East, Asia and Central America, looking at the regimes they created and how they fell apart.

Course aim

To examine the rise and dramatic falls of ten world dictators from the 20th and 21st Centuries.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Outline the basic characteristics of each dictatorship and how it functioned
  • Discuss the personalities of each of the dictators studied
  • Identify the forces that caused a dictator's downfall
  • Examine how the dictator lost power and the events that occurred during that fall
  • Examine the fates of the dictators and their families after their falls from power

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
