Italian History and Culture

This course is aimed at people with an interest in "Everything Italian". As well as learning about the historical "Risorgimento" (unification) from King Vittorio Emmanuelle to Berlusconi, the course will give learners a practical introduction to the musical language of Italian with the aim at being able to "GET by" on holiday in Italy. Part of each course will also discuss Italian food and why we have moved so far from Spaghetti Bolognese.

Course aim

A brief introduction to Italian History and Culture including some language learning.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • A love of learning about Italy's fascinating history and culture and a light hearted approach to learning some of the musical language.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss and debate aspects of Italy's history including their own experiences in Italy.
  • Describe the basic elements of the Unification.
  • Feel confident using basic language skills particularly helpful when holidaying in Italy.
  • Compare cultural differences between in Italy and Britain. Also, the differences within the country.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Some role plays around language

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • A sense of humour would be good to appreciate anecdotes around mistakes in language learning!
