In many ways the twentieth century was the century of psychology as the subject acquired an importance in the understanding of issues of mental health, social management, education and personal development. Yet psychology has been part of our understanding since at least the time of the Greeks. This course will introduce students to the important developments in the various branches of psychology, and raise questions about how we ought to investigate the mind and behaviour.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to the history of psychology from classical times through to the present.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise the principles and assumptions of different approaches to studying the mind and behaviour, including psychoanalytic, cognitive, biological, behaviourist, social and neuroscientific approaches)
  • Discuss how key approaches are grounded in studies and assumptions from past centuries
  • Identify some moral problems of psychological research
  • Use some key psychological vocabulary in discussions

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
