We shall look at the letters and documents of the Pastons to gain a detailed picture of what it was like to live through the Wars of the Roses, with a focus on the upheavals and issues peculiar to the Norfolk gentry at this time.

Course aim

To provide an overview of fifteenth-century East Anglia as experienced by one gentry family and their network.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • You will be able to describe and explain key aspects of the lives of individual Pastons.
  • You will be able to discuss and describe what life was like in fifteenth-century East Anglia.
  • You will be able to analyse the documents associated with this family.
  • You will be able to use these documents confidently to support research of your local community.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Many of the sessions will primarily be illustrated talks but there will also be some small group activities or pair-work and discussion.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • The Day School will involve numerous opportunities for discussion, providing moments for feedback and reflection.

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • There will be a handout for each session within the Day School but students might find it helpful to bring along writing implements with which to make notes and annotate the provided materials.
