The Italian Renaissance Courts

The princely dynasties of Italy, from Milan to Naples, Mantua to Urbino, used art as manifestation of their prestige, their aspirations and their rule. We shall examine the ways in which artists such as Leonardo and Pisanello, Mantegna and Piero della Francesca helped shaping the identity of some of the most glittering Renaissance courts.

Course aim

To introduce the participants to the splendour and variety of art and architecture produced for the princely courts of Italy during the 15th and early 16th century.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Analyse some paintings created for the courts of either Naples or Mantua in a critical way.
  • List two reasons for the commissioning of artworks by the Renaissance courts.
  • Evaluate two main features of court architecture.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • a short reading list will be provided at the beginning of the course

What can I do next?

  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Participants might decide to join other WEA courses on Renaissance art; undertake independent reading; visit some of the places examined during the course and see artworks first-hand.
