Drawing for Textiles

The session will consist of a series of practical activities to produce practical responses to tutor guided fun and lively interactive mark making techniques and drawing tasks. Using simple drawing materials and a range of papers and textured surfaces, experiment with line, scale and drawing exercises to produce unique mark making for stitched textile projects. During the session you will produce a range of textile sample techniques, which you can use to inform future stitch textile projects or to aid development your own creative work.

Course aim

Fun and lively practical exploration of basic drawing materials and techniques to develop design ideas in readiness for stitched textile work.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Gain practical experience of mark making to explore stitch ideas
  • Capture visual ideas quickly and simply
  • Build confidence in mark making and idea development

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • If you already have drawing materials, sketchbook or notebook bring them along but other resources will be available for you to use during the session.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • There will be further textile classes to develop this approach further.
