The Beauty of Berlioz's Music

Celebrating the 150th anniversary of H.Berlioz`s death, this course will investigate the life, times and music of the French composer, Hector Berlioz, and put into context the influential 19th century style of H.Berlioz`s music. In addition, the distinctive musical characteristics associated with 19th century Romanticism, as exemplified in H.Berlioz`s music, will be studied. Furthermore, H.Berlioz`s significant contributions to the modern orchestra, with his treatise on Instrumentation, will be briefly considered. No prior musical knowledge is required.

Course aim

This course celebrates the 150th anniversary of the death of the early 19th century composer, Hector Berlioz, and will consider how his musical style, associated with 19th century musical romanticism, became very influential to subsequent composers.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • identify the basic elements bound within music.
  • briefly describe Berlioz`s life circumstances and contemporary times.
  • briefly describe` Romantic `musical style.
  • recall several of H.Berlioz`s compositions.
  • enjoy listening to Berlioz`s music with greater understanding and enjoyment.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Use of SMART criteria in setting objectives and learning methods.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
