History Day School: New Light on the Dead Sea Scrolls

The chance find in 1947 of scrolls from the time of Jesus that had lain hidden for 2000 caused a sensation and the implications of the find are still debated This course examines the background to the discovery and the emerging consensus about the meaning of these ancient documents But not everyone agrees with the consensus and conspiracy theories are rife. The course aims to provide a guide through the swirl of arguments and opinions to discover what we can really know.

Course aim

To provide an overview of the significance of the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls and to examine the controversy that has surrounded them

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explain an understanding of the background to the original discovery of the Scrolls
  • Interpret the range of arguments in favour of the authorship and content of the Scrolls
  • Debate in class the reasons for against the consensus view of the Scrolls
  • Examine the opinions surrounding the mysterious Copper Scroll from cave 3

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
