Lancaster and York: From Henry IV to Richard III

Following the deposition and murder of Richard II in 1399 the Lancastrian kings Henry IV and V assumed power. But the weak rule of Henry VI led to mounting discontent and the outbreak of the Wars of the Roses The reign of the Edward IV seemed to denote complete Yorkist victory but the controversial reign of Richard III would end at Bosworth Field in 1485 with victory for Henry Tudor This course examines the reigns of each of these kings and the society of the later Middle Ages

Course aim

To explore the period from 1399-1485 and the reasons for the conflict known as the Wars of the Roses

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise the characters of the kings who reigned in this period
  • Assess the changes taking place in society at this time
  • Evaluate the reasons for the outbreak of the Wars of the Roses
  • Discuss in class your opinion of the character of Richard III

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Students will have the option to follow up by reading books or visiting websites in their own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
