Beginner and upwards, learn the basics of painting at your at your own pace. Paint with acrylics using a range of techniques on a variety of subjects. You'll be guided along the way with step by step demonstrations, and sound advice. You'll discover the basics of making your own paintings, and mixing colour with confidence.

Course aim

Learn to paint acrylics at your own pace with award winning artist Steve Strode. Step by step demonstrations on a range subjects in a friendly environment.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify primary, secondary and complementary colours
  • Demonstrate and understand the mixing of paint
  • Evaluate their own work and that of their peers
  • Be able to identify, and put into practice the 5 stages of making a painting

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A materials list will be provided at the start of the course, but you basically need a handful of paints for a simple palette, a couple of paint brushes, and thick paper to paint on, along with an old shirt etc to paint in.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Although the course is primarily a leisure activity, further study could be followed for a nationally recognised certificate
