Sewing Skills

This course will provide students with the skills to read and understand pattern data and use the information to complete a project. Students will choose their own project with support from the tutor if required. Both sewing machines and overlockers can be used on this course and students new to sewing can learn how to sew on a sewing machine.

Course aim

To introduce the core skills in basic sewing techniques and pattern reading which will help students to work through and complete a project of their own choice

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • sort and select relevant information from a commercial pattern for own personal use and record evidence
  • Choose the appropriate core skills and techniques required to make a project
  • Plan and record the progress of a project
  • set up and use a sewing machine or an overlocker without any help
  • Organise and make samples of necessary techniques required for a chosen project

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Your pattern and fabric and basic sewing kit. Own sewing machine an advantage but some machines are provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • are paying the standard fee or are on any of the qualifying benefits
