Create a Fabric Memory Book

This inspirational course offers a variety of bookmaking techniques. Students will learn how to make and sew signatures and will learn how to recognize and use tools, paints dyes, stamps, fabric and memorabilia to produce a Memory Book or Journal. You will use a variety of fabrics and lace, buttons and ephemera that may have a special meaning to you. You will also learn how to transfer pictures and photographs using digital imaging techniques and other mediums. You will have fun experimenting with the design of your book and you will learn techniques for the use of journaling in your book of how to record memories to treasure.

Course aim

to introduce students to the art of bookmaking and art journals using simple techniques with a view to making a memory journal from both fabric and paper using creative processes.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • follow the design process of making fabric pages
  • measure and make accurate signatures in paper to sew into a fabric book
  • make and embellish the pages of the book using a variety of design processes
  • make a book cover to reflect the design of the book
  • to put the fabric pages and paper signatures together in the form of a book

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Basic sewing kit

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
