Design and Make Bags with Style

This will be a highly productive course for students who want to learn the techniques of bag making or to improve existing skills of previous makes. You will learn how to stabilize fabrics with various products and make handles or straps using several different techniques. You will learn how to add hardware to your bag making for a professional finish. You will design your bag with this knowledge and make it to your own specifications. The techniques you will learn will be piping, binding, applying zips and how to make a pattern. You will also learn how to set eyelets and poppers into fabric.

Course aim

to introduce students to a variety of bag making techniques and bag hardware and inspire students to be creative in the design and construction of bags.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • to stabilize fabric in a variety of ways
  • to make bag handles and a bag strap using the correct hardware applications
  • to use piping binding and a zip application in a sample or bag project
  • to set eyelets and poppers into fabric to use in a project or a sample
  • to make a bag pattern to my own specifications and requirements

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Basic sewing kit for first session and tutor will provide a list for future sessions

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
