Creative Techniques in Art Quilting

This course is for students who would like to learn different techniques used in art quilting including applique, painting on fabric, heat setting Angelina fibres and hot foils, hand and machine stitching adding beads and ephemera and use them in preparing and delivering your own designs. There will be lots of experimenting with a variety of hand dyed fabrics, habadashery, mixed media and fabric paints. Students will learn how to use their finished work in other projects or make framed pieces for the purpose of art.

Course aim

to introduce students to a variety of techniques used in art quilting using mixed media and to inspire students to be creative in their designs.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Record my experiments in a notebook or file and collect samples of work to use as a future resource. (sketch book)
  • recognize and know how to use a variety of mixed media in the making of a design
  • design a piece of work on paper and understand the perspective of size and ratio of the design
  • produce my own piece of work using a variety of techniques on the course
  • add hand or machine stitching to my design using a variety of threads for hand sewn stitches and metallic and silk threads for machine stitching to add lustre to the piece

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
