LCA Introduction to Advice Work

This course is for volunteers who are new to Liverpool Community Advice, whatever their role, and will introduce the main aspects of the work of the organisation. The course will cover topics such as the provision of advice and guidance and the aims, principles and polices that underpin the work of the service.

Title: Introduction to Advice Work Dates: 15, 19, 22, 23 March 2018. Time: 5 hours per day 10:00 – 15.30 (learners will have a 30 min lunch break)

Course aim

To provide an introduction to the main skills needed to advise clients across a range of subject areas.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss how different attitudes can affect the advice giving process
  • Use Liverpool Community Advice's information resources to advise clients appropriately and accurately
  • Identify the most common types of welfare benefits and how clients can claim these
  • List examples of the types of campaigning work that Liverpool Community Advice undertakes
  • Facilitate an energy price comparison exercise with a client

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Learners will need to bring a notebook and a pen

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • This course will enable learners to undertake their role within Liverpool Community Advice and gain experience. This experience in turn could lead to further learning and career opportunities.
