Sewing Skills

This course will provide students with the skills to read and understand pattern data and use the information to complete a project. Students will choose their own project with support from the tutor if required. Both sewing machines and overlockers can be used on this course and students new to sewing can learn how to sew on a sewing machine.

Course aim

To introduce the core skills in basic sewing techniques and pattern reading which will help students to work through and complete a project of their own choice.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Sort and select relevant information from a commercial pattern for own personal use and record evidence
  • Choose the appropriate core skills and techniques required to make a project
  • Plan and record the progress of a project
  • Set up and use a sewing machine or overlocker without any help
  • Organize and make samples of necessary techniques required for a chosen project

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Some sewing machines and limited equipment and supplies will be available for classroom activities/ Students can bring own sewing machines and must provide their own basic sewing kit. A list of suggested items will be provided at the first lesson.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
