An Introduction to Sewing Skills

This course is for beginners who have not used a sewing machine before or not used one for a long time and would like to refresh their sewing skills. Students will learn how to set up and use a sewing machine with confidence and then learn basic core skills which will prepare them for a future workshop to make simple first time projects.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to basic sewing skills on a sewing machine for students to gain confidence. Students will make a simple project to demonstrate the skills learned on the course.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Set up and use a sewing machine with confidence
  • Change machine feet and use for different tasks
  • Change a machine needle
  • Change and use stitch length and stitch width facility on the machine

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • The tutor will give out a list of basic sewing items on the first session and students will be required to bring them to future sessions on the course

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
