The course is for anyone who would like to develop basic skills to make soft furnishing item with implementing employment skills

Course aim

To learn new sewing techniques,create your own style using a variety of techniques and colour combinations. getting to grips with measuring and calculating to create a project for you home

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English
  • This course is for women only as it is held in a women's centre

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Collect a range of ideas and techniques to use as inspiration for soft furnishing project
  • Demonstrated the need for accuracy in carrying out your project
  • Demonstrated differences between imperial / metric and make correct use of measurement for the project
  • Make a costing sheet for your project including all materials
  • Produce a finished item and give 2 or 3 examples of how they use soft furnishing skills for employment/ self employment

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Essential materials such as books, haberdashery and basic sewing equipment to be provided by the student

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
